Northwestern took the early lead with an improbable Week One win over Stanford. Michigan State made its way to the top with its much-anticipated vengeance of Oregon.
Michigan became the darlings of the conference and the nation with celebrity coach Jim Harbaugh inspiring a stifling defense with a historic shutout streak. Iowa keeps winning ugly and loses never. Yet it’s the team that started on top of the college football world that may have fought through quarterback decisions, unreasonable expectations, and its own boredom to right itself just in time for another championship stretch drive.
