This week’s Group of Five power rankings sees a change in the top four after Toledo survived an upset attempt and Houston, Memphis and Temple keep winning.
Several moves occurred throughout the Group of Five power rankings this week. Toledo was able to recover after a scary start last weekend and remains undefeated in advance of a MAC showdown with perennial MAC power Northern Illinois.
The only Group of Five conference that has more than one undefeated or one loss team is the American, and it blows the other conferences out of the water. Memphis, Temple and Houston are all undefeated, and Navy has just one loss.
The next closest conference is the MAC, where Toledo remains undefeated; and then the Sun Belt has 6-1 Appalachian State. This year has been a very down year for the Mountain West Conference. Boise State has the best record at 6-2, but there appears to be a drop off talent-wise, and a chunk of the conference risks not even making a bowl game.
Utah State put themselves in the mix with a win over Boise State, but then took themselves right back out with a loss at San Diego State last Friday. While they can still win the Mountain West Conference, it’d be a feat to even get back into the top ten here in the rankings.
Since the American looks so strong, the possibility exists that a one loss American Conference team would be selected over an undefeated Toledo.
We’ll have to wait another week to see how the Playoff Committee arranges the teams to get a better idea of what teams need to do. According to the polls, Memphis is the best team among the Group of Five, followed by Toledo, Houston, and Temple, but what will our Power Rankings say?
