The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been decimated by injuries this year and suffered another potentially devastating loss in the first half against Pitt with C.J. Prosise leaving in the first half.

Notre Dame running back C.J. Prosise left in the first half of the game against the Pittsburgh Panthers with a concussion and potentially a shoulder injury as well, according to Irish Illustrated’s Pete Sampson.

Prosise has been a revelation for Notre Dame this year after a suspension to No. 2 Greg Bryant and a season-ending injury to starting running back Tarean Folston after the season opener. He’s among the nation’s leaders in rushing with 947 yards and 11 touchdowns and has added value as a receiver out of the backfield with 23 receptions for 232 yards and a touchdown.

But his availability could be limited moving forward if there’s a shoulder in addition to the concussion as Sampson is reporting. A concussion is a tricky thing to put a timetable on for a return to the lineup, but if there’s a separated or otherwise injured shoulder on top of that, it could hurt the No. 5 team in the country as they chase down a Playoff spot.

Notre Dame has Wake Forest next week weekend, so should Prosise have to miss that game, the Fighting Irish will be fine with freshmen backs Josh Adams and Darrell Williams.

Notre Dame has Boston College and their dominant defense (and non-existent offense) the week after that before the season finale at Stanford on Nov. 28.

If Prosise isn’t back by then, it could be a potential College Football Playoff play-in game as the Irish try to nail down a spot with one of the nation’s most underrated players in a year they’ve lost one impact performer after another.
