The College Football Playoff rankings are but two weeks old this season, and we’re already immersed in some controversy. Don’t worry, things can always become more strange, and probably will.

With only four playoff spots and seven possible entrants – ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, Pac-12, Notre Dame and Group of Five representative – the playoff selection committee has their work cut out for them this season. It’s gone from far too many undefeated teams, to far too many one-loss teams.

Last season, the Big 12 found themselves holding the bag while the other four Power-5 conferences were all represented in the playoffs. Being the only one without a conference championship game, they have more work to do to prove themselves in the regular season.

The ACC has the stigma of being a weak football conference to overcome, although if No. 1 Clemson continues winning, they won’t have a thing to fear in terms of a playoff spot.

The Big Ten may find themselves in a position of a one or two-loss team winning the conference championship, which could open the door for other teams. The SEC is in a similar position, as well has having a weak non-conference schedule to get past in the eyes of the committee.

The Pac-12 is in real trouble already, with nobody wanting to take lead and hold on to it in the conference. They may be the early entrant into the consolation bowl on New Year’s.

With Notre Dame already in the top four, and Houston being the only Group of Five team with a realistic shot at being selected, we may see two Power-5 conferences left out in the cold.

Here are the most bizarre possible final four combinations that could happen at this point. Of course, all of these possibilities are depending on the all-knowing, all-seeing eye test by the committee, but they are still possible. One thing is clear – the BCS computers would have exploded this season.
