19. Rivalries

This is what college football is about, the rivalry. In-state rivals, in-conference rivals, traditional rivals and even conference vs. conference rivals are some of the things that make college football special.

Some rivalries go back over a century, some are more current, but one thing runs through all the rivalries without a doubt – the teams, the fans, the peanut vendors and even the coaches (sometimes) don’t like each other at all.

They’ll refuse to call each other by the schools proper name, some rivalries have a trophy attached, and some have become so big that they are an event within the season. The Egg Bowl, the Iron Bowl, the Game, the Cocktail Party…there isn’t an FBS team who doesn’t have at least one team they consider to be the most bitter rival, and whose season can be judged as a success or failure based on the outcome of that game.
