BYU Football: Cougars’ season will be defined by Utah State game

BYU looks to close their season on a high note with a win against rival Utah State.

It has been an up and down season for the BYU Cougars but they can end their season with a big statement in their rivalry game against Utah State who have questions at quarterback.

After Utah State beat Boise State things were looking up in Logan, Utah. But the following week the Aggies crashed in their game at San Diego State and followed up losing two of their next three games. Utah State barely reached bowl eligibility with a very close win against Nevada.

While it is a rivalry game according to many fans, a defeat to a five-loss team to end the regular season wouldn’t be a very respectable one for BYU, especially considering how BYU’s strength of schedule didn’t end up as good as was planned.

Cincinnati and ECU went flat and Boise State is taking a downward spiral. Add Nebraska’s and Utah State’s mediocre seasons and you get the picture that a fourth loss of the season happening this week is unacceptable.

Utah State, however, would be eager to win this weekend, grabbing two games in a row against the Cougars. Last year quarterback Taysom Hill got hurt against the Aggies and BYU lost 35-20.

Utah State has had some instability at the quarterback position this season. Chuckie Keeton started the season and got hurt again, and Kent Myers took over. Keeton is now back but hasn’t played 100 percent. BYU should have the advantage at quarterback with freshman Tanner Mangum, who is “the most prolific freshman QB in school history,” as stated by Jeff Call, via desertnews.com.

Overall BYU should get the win, but odd things have happened. The game is at Utah State, so that could make BYU’s ninth win a bit more difficult.
