Trevone Boykin, TCU beat Baylor, Bears eliminated from Big 12, playoff mix

The Baylor Bears are eliminated from the Big 12 and College Football Playoff conversation after losing in double overtime to the TCU Horned Frogs.

Baylor beat TCU 61-58 last year but both teams combined to only score 49 points in a game that went to double overtime and played during a monsoon all evening.

TCU playing with a hobbled Trevone Boykin at quarterback got a one-yard touchdown run from him in the first overtime and the game-winning score came on an eight-yard pass from Boykin to KaVontae Turpin. TCU head coach Gary Patterson said he was only 75 percent in a post game interview on ESPN with Tom Luginbill.

Tonight’s win may have been his best coaching performance of the year during awful weather conditions with an injured quarterback and a defense decimated by injuries. TCU has had to play 30 freshmen this year but this win gave TCU their 10th win for the 10th time under Patterson.

And it was a win that came down to the TCU defense getting a stop on 4th-and-1 and the Horned Frogs stuffing the Baylor run.

It was a win led by the Horned Frogs defense that didn’t allow Baylor quarterback Chris Johnson to complete a pass in the second half and held Baylor to only 68 yards passing, the fewest they have had in a game since 2002. Johnson was making his first career start as the third-stringer filled in for Jarrett Stidham who was replacing Seth Russell.

With Johnson practicing more at wide receiver than quarterback this year, the Baylor passing attack was vulnerable for the first time in more than a decade and the elements didn’t help.

Devin Chafin was the Baylor offense with 119 yards rushing and two scores and a four-yard touchdown reception in overtime, the first Baylor completion since the second quarter.

All-American candidate Corey Coleman was held to one catch for eight yards and has been held out of the end zone three straight games after scoring 20 touchdowns in the team’s first eight games.

The loss ends Baylor’s pursuit of the Big 12 title and any slim chance they had of the College Football Playoff along with that.
