Temple jumped out of the gates early, winning their first seven contests including an impressive 37-10 victory over Penn State in the opener. and played in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game.

The Owls showed tremendous balance offensively led by junior P.J. Walker under center who threw for 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Walker’s classmate, running back Jahad Thomas complemented the signal-caller nicely in the backfield with 1,257 yards and 17 touchdowns on 268 attempts, including rushing for more than 100 yards four times this season.

On the other sideline, senior Phillip Ely played his heart out for the Rockets as the quarterback threw for 2,680 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

After a rocky start to the 2015 campaign, junior running back Kareem Hunt put things together at the end of the season. He missed the first two games of the season due to a pulled hamstring and a violation of team rules, but came out firing on all cylinders when he returned, as he carried the ball 24 times for 159 yards as Toledo beat Iowa State 30-23 in two overtimes on September 19 and enters the bowl game with 894 yards and eight touchdowns.

Prediction

Lost in the x’s and o’s of this game is Toledo lost their head coach Matt Campbell to the Iowa State job and Jason Candle is taking over as the new head coach. Had Campbell been on the staff, this game takes on a completely new look and could be much more competitive.

I think Candle will be fine in the long run, but his first game as a head coach could be a tough one considering the Temple defense ranks in the top 18 in both total and scoring defense.

Both teams will come out eager and hungry to win this game, but Temple’s combination of Walker and Thomas on offense will be too much for the Rockets to handle. The two teams will keep it close early, but Temple pulls away in the second half to win their first bowl game since 2011.
