Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey named AP player of the year
Stanford Cardinal all-purpose running back Christian McCaffrey didn’t win the Heisman Trophy, but he is the winner of the AP college football player of the year.
Christian McCaffrey finished in second place to Alabama Crimson Tide running back Derrick Henry in a narrow Heisman vote earlier this month, but he did add the honor of being named the Associated Press player of the year, becoming the first non-Heisman winner to do so in six year.

Other non-Heisman winners to win the award, include Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in 2009, Iowa quarterback Brad Banks in 2002, Florida quarterback Rex Grossman in 2001 and Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel in 2000.
McCaffrey broke the FBS all-purpose yard record previously held by Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders in his Heisman winning season. He received 29 of the 60 votes while Henry received 16 and third-place finisher in the Heisman, Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson, also finished third in this vote.
Also receiving votes were Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield who received two votes apiece.
McCaffrey and Stanford are preparing to play the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day where he’ll look to add to his historic season that’s seen him rush for 1,847 yards and a total of 3,496 all-purpose yards and 15 total touchdowns. McCaffrey scored on as a runner, receiver, thrower and kick returner as he proved to be the most versatile player in college football.
