Davis Webb: Top 5 transfer destinations for ex-Texas Tech QB

Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Davis Webb is transferring from the program and will be eligible to play immediately, so who are the teams who would be interested in Webb?

Davis Webb is leaving Texas Tech, according to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman and later confirmed by Webb via twitter.

Webb is nine credits shy of graduating and plans to enroll at his new school by the summer according to Feldman and he considers the SEC and Pac-12 teams would be interested in the former starting quarterback.

He made six starts as a true freshman in 2013 when he competed with current Oklahoma quarterback for the starting job. He finished the year completing 62.6 percent of his passes for 2,718 yards and 20 touchdowns to nine interceptions. Webb finished his freshman year with 403 yards and four touchdowns to win the Holiday Bowl against Arizona State.

That led Mayfield to transfer with Webb seemingly entrenched as the starter, but losing five of six games after a 2-0 start, he was benched in favor of Patrick Mahomes who remained the starter in 2015. Webb only attempted 41 passes this year and is looking for a chance to play again.

There won’t be any shortage of suitors for Webb and anyone who asks head coach Kliff Kingsbury for a review will get a glowing one about his competitiveness, work ethic and physical ability. The 6-5, 225-pound quarterback could be next year’s version of Mayfield and shake up the national championship conversation.

So where could Webb transfer? Three SEC programs make a lot of sense.

1. Auburn Tigers

Jeremy Johnson isn’t the answer and Sean White may not be either to run Gus Malzahn’s offense. An offseason should help them develop, but neither has shown anything like Webb has shown in his time, so he would be an instant upgrade. I think Malzahn and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee would love to have a talent like Webb to make their jobs easier.

2. Texas A&M Aggies

No Kyle Allen. No Kyler Murray. The starting job is his for the taking if he wants it. The Prosper, TX native will have some talented weapons to work with in Freshman All-American Christian Kirk, Ricky Seals-Jones and Speedy Noil — if he isn’t suspended. Texas A&M has an improving defense with Myles Garrett and Daylon Mack and the second year in John Chavis system could mean this team challenges to shed the underachiever label with Webb being the x-factor.

3. Florida Gators

Will Grier announced he was transferring after he was suspended for a full season after testing for a banned substance. That leaves Treon Harris to continue in his starting role where he’s been subpar or turn the offense over to incoming freshman Felipe Franks. Florida can repeat as SEC champs with Webb.

4. Michigan Wolverines

Look what Jim Harbaugh did with Jake Rudock in one year and imagine what he could do with a superior talent like Webb. Michigan has options on the roster in Wilton Speight and John O’Korn, but if Webb says he wants to go to Ann Arbor, can you say no?

5. Memphis Tigers

I don’t know how likely it is, but Paxton Lynch is leaving for the NFL and new head coach Mike Norvell’s offense could make for a great fit for his skill-set. The same can be said for Norvell’s old school, Arizona State, who could be a fit for Webb.

He was lightly recruited out of high school, so I don’t think Webb will rush into a decision and will use the next few weeks to take his visits before making a decision sometime in February.
