With NFL head coaching jobs opening up after the season came to an end, could Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw jump from college football to the pros?

It’s Black Monday in the NFL where head coaches are being fired and resigning left and right and attractive jobs are opening up across the league. Some of the openings could entice some of the best head coaches in college football to make the leap from college to the NFL.

Stanford head coach David Shaw has been the most coveted college head coach among NFL teams in recent years with a 54-14 record in five years with the Cardinal, including four top-10 finishes and three Rose Bowl appearances. Before he was Stanford’s head coach he was an assistant with four NFL teams from 1997-2005, but a return to the NFL doesn’t appear to be in the cards for Shaw, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The San Francisco 49ers job opening up would seem like a natural transition for Shaw, just as it was for his former boss, Jim Harbaugh who left Stanford for the 49ers, but the way that relationship ended, there’s no way Shaw would work for Trent Baalke, Jed York and the 49ers.

But what about reuniting with former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the Indianapolis Colts? Rapoport says that job opening wouldn’t change his mind that he’s staying in college and staying with Stanford.
