The Georgia football program picked up the commitment from the nation’s top tight end with Isaac Nauta picking the Bulldogs.

Kirby Smart pulled double-duty as head coach of Georgia while continuing his duties as the defensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide, but it didn’t slow him down to press for the commitment from No. 1 tight end Isaac Nauta.

During the U.S. Army All-American Game on Saturday, Nauta committed to play for Smart at Georgia over Alabama and Michigan. He was previously committed to Florida State on July 29.

Nauta is a Buford, GA native and mentioned during his announcement during the NBC broadcast that playing his college football near his home was important to him.

He is a five-star prospect and ranked as the nation’s No. 9 overall recruit, No. 1 tight end and the No. 3 recruit in the state of Georgia, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The 6-3, 244-pound Nauta had 13 catches for 230 yards and two touchdowns playing his senior season at IMG Academy where Shea Patterson and Ole Miss commit and the MVP in the Army All-American Game was his quarterback.

But it was another Army All-American that he’ll be catching passes for the next few years in Athens with Jacob Eason giving Nauta an elite arm to get him the ball.

With the commitment of Nauta, which doesn’t come as a surprise, Georgia now has the nation’s No. 5 recruiting class and the No. 2 class in the SEC, trailing LSU who owns the top class in the nation.

There’s still plenty of time to move up or down in the rankings depending on what happens between now and National Signing Day on Feb. 3 but Smart’s first class is shaping up to be as good as the ones he was accustomed to while at Alabama.

And Smart owes a thank you to former Georgia head coach Mark Richt for that.
