If there were ever a school who probably shouldn’t have an incredibly successful football program, it has to be Stanford. But they do.

One of the ultimate nerditoriums, Stanford university sends really smart kids who weren’t good enough to get into Stanford to places like Georgia Tech and Cal. They weren’t known much for football until Jim Harbaugh transformed this team into a Pac-12 power, and David Shaw has picked up where Harbaugh left off.

Their band is one of the quirkiest (and that’s a nice way of saying it) performing groups in the nation. Their unofficial mascot is a big pine tree, and their team name is simply a color…cardinal (red, not the bird). None of this adds up to football prowess, but the school who gave us Google also gives us some great football.
