Notre Dame has a need for linebackers. Can the Irish land one of the best linebacker recruits in Caleb Kelly?

As National Signing Day draws near, Notre Dame football is waiting on word from one of the most sought after recruits in Caleb Kelly.

According to Rivals, Kelly is the No. 3 outside linebacker in the 2016 class. The California native has narrowed his list down to three schools. That list includes Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Oregon. It seems that ND and OU are the two favorites to land Kelly with the Ducks being a bit of a long shot.

The Irish have a need at outside linebacker after the departure of Jaylon Smith. Kelly could have the opportunity to step in and play right away if he does decide to come to ND. Kelly is very similar to Smith in that he is very quick and athletic.

Two weeks ago it seemed that Kelly would choose the Irish, but things have changed in the last week. Over the last week or so Oklahoma has been a big push for Kelly making them slight favorites over ND. The two schools are in a battle that will probably not be decided until NSD this Tuesday.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly is scheduled to make one last visit with Kelly this Tuesday in a last effort to make him commit.

Will Brian Kelly and his staff’s final push be enough to land the five-star recruit? That question remains unanswered right now, but Irish fans should have an answer in the next couple of days.
