The Nebraska football team picked up a big addition to help the secondary in the coming years with the verbal commitment from four-star safety Lamar Jackson.

Mike Riley didn’t get a lot of wins during his first year with the Nebraska Cornhuskers but he picked up a significant recruiting win on Tuesday, one day before National Signing Day, with the addition of four-star athlete Lamar Jackson (Elk Grove, CA. Franklin) who revealed his college of choice in a video from Bleacher Report.

He is the nation’s No. 81 overall recruit, No. 5 safety and the No. 13 recruit in the state of California, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings and picked Nebraska over Arizona State, Arizona and offers from all over the Pac-12 conference.

He took his official visit to Nebraska on Nov. 7 and that’s when it seemed like a formality that Jackson would be headed to Big Red Country to play for the Huskers. Riley and Nebraska held off Arizona and the other pursuers for the Under Armour All-American who could have a tremendous impact for the program and potentially right away as a true freshman.

The 6-3, 205-pound Jackson runs a 4.46 40 and is more or less a physical marvel to be that big and run that fast and I wonder if Jackson could ultimately move down to linebacker if he continues to fill out and add more bulk and strength. But right away, Jackson will get his chance to compete for playing time in the secondary and on special teams as a freshman for a program that desperately needed a talent like Jackson and their hope is more recruits will follow him to Lincoln.
