The Texas football team is having a big day on National Signing Day and the commitment from Jeffrey McCulloch makes it even better for Charlie Strong and the Longhorns.

Charlie Strong hasn’t won enough games in his first two years as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, but he has shown the ability to pick up some nice wins on the recruiting trail. That reputation followed him from the Florida Gators and Louisville Cardinals where Strong proved he could be one of the best closers in the country.

Strong’s reputation won’t take a hit this year after a successful National Signing Day in 2016 headlined by the addition of four-star outside linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch (Houston, TX. Aldine Davis). He picked the Longhorns over Stanford, Alabama, Notre Dame and Florida.

The 6-2.5, 230-pound outside linebacker is the nation’s No. 59 overall recruit, No. 4 outside linebacker and the No. 11 recruit in the state of Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

McCulloch is the team’s highest-ranked recruit by a wide margin with No. 116 recruit Jean Delance a distant second, but if Strong can continue to add quality depth to the roster and get an infusion of young talent in Austin, Texas will be back to double-digit win seasons in the next year or two.

Granted, playing so many underclassmen may not result in the double-digit win seasons fans are clamoring for and why Strong is feeling the pressure to win, but this was a tough rebuild he had on his hands that not many want to admit.

Texas began the day with the nation’s No. 24 class and the No. 4 class in the Big 12, according to the 247Sports Team Rankings, but could end the day with a potential top-10 class.
