Calvin Johnson retires: Watch Megatron’s highlights at Georgia Tech (Video)

Before he was Megatron, Calvin Johnson was dominating folks as a two-time All-American at Georgia Tech.

Calvin Johnson officially retired from the NFL on Tuesday after nine seasons with the Detroit Lions where he put up Hall of Fame-caliber numbers.

The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft (one pick after Oakland took JaMarcus Russell) was a six-time Pro Bowler is the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions and yards, the fastest to 10,000 career yards and his 1,964 yards in 2012 is the most in a season.

But before Calvin Johnson was Megatron and arguably the most physically imposing wide receiver in NFL history, he was schooling folks with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for three seasons.

Needless to say, Johnson racked up plenty of highlight-reel plays during his three-year career at Georgia Tech and in honor of his retirement, it’s time to revisit his greatness during his time with the Yellow Jackets.

Johnson came to Georgia Tech as the nation’s No. 6 wide receiver recruit and No. 37 overall, according to Rivals and he made an immediate impact as an All-ACC selection as a freshman.

Two years later, Johnson finished his career with 178 receptions for 2,927 yards and 28 touchdowns. He is first in program history in yards and touchdowns and second in receptions. There were just so many highlights that they couldn’t be contained in one video package.

He was an All-American his last two seasons at Georgia Tech and won the Biletnikoff as the nation’s best receiver as a junior in 2006 with 76 receptions for 1,202 yards and a program single-season record 15 touchdowns.

He also won the ACC Player of the Year and finished tenth in the Heisman, which is always remarkable for a receiver, nonetheless one from a non-traditional football power.
