Is Anu Solomon’s job safe?

Anu Solomon has dealt with injuries ever since he was named the starter for Arizona back in 2014. Ankle injuries and multiple concussions have kept Solomon from completing an entire season, forcing Arizona to look to their backups.

But Arizona got a good look at redshirt sophomore quarterback Brandon Dawkins in their final game of 2015 vs. Arizona State. Dawkins came in to replace Jerrard Randall, who got the start in place of Solomon due to a concussion suffered the week before. Randall got yanked and in came Dawkins, who showed a lot of promise, coming in with little to no preparation. It left a lot Arizona fans wondering why he had been the third-string quarterback the entire time.

That game gave Brandon Dawkins a boatload of confidence, and it made the coaches take him a little more seriously. Solomon has dealt with a hamstring injury this spring, which has allowed Dawkins to get first-team reps. He’s starting to close the gap as the starting quarterback, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him beat out Solomon for the starting job.

Given Solomon’s injury history, it seems as if the Pac-12 is bound to see Dawkins at some point this season. Even if Solomon is named the starter, a little quarterback competition never hurt anyone.
