BYU had one of its best-attended scrimmages ever, and quarterback Tanner Mangum didn’t disappoint in his performance.

In an interview given by radio host Greg Wrubell before the scrimmage, offensive coordinator Ty Detmer assured that “what you see Saturday won’t be a great indication of what you’ll see in the fall.”

Head coach Kalani Sitake also confirmed that we want to “keep everything a surprise… “The goal is to win games in the fall.” In general, BYU is moving to a pro-style offense and mostly playing a 4-3 defense instead of a 3-4.

Much of BYU’s playbook may be a secret to BYU’s opponents, but they know most of the weapons they’ll be dealing with. It starts with quarterbacks Taysom Hill and Tanner Mangum, who are vying for the number one spot.

Hill has been limited in spring practice but has participated while trying to fully heal his foot. He missed the scrimmage due to a sudden family emergency.

Mangum, however, got some scrimmage reps, throwing for three touchdowns between a few seven-on-seven and full squad drives. In the full 11-on-11 scrimmage, he played for both blue and white and finished going six-of-nine for 92 yards. Quarterbacks Beau Hoge and Koy Detmer played the majority of the scrimmage.

Mangum said he still has a lot to learn in regard to the new offense, but he hasn’t appeared to digress in any way. Mangum expressed his trust in Detmer, saying on BYU Sports Nation that “Detmer is the quarterback guru.”

BYU will have one more week of practices before wrapping up spring ball.
