NFL Draft: 10 biggest quarterback busts of all-time
By Gabe Encinas
As the newest NFL team, the Houston Texans needed a quarterback to propel themselves onto the scene. They took a chance with David Carr out of Fresno State with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Carr had a rough start to his NFL career, constantly finding himself on the ground, sacked 78 times in his rookie season, leading his team to a 4-12 season. But this was a new expansion team, there were going to be growing pains, especially with a rookie quarterback.
In 2003, Carr started 11 games, going 5-7 in that span. He was also only sacked 15 times in that season. In 2004, he had what is likely the best year of his career, leading the Texans to a 7-9 record, improving yet again. He found himself sacked 49 times. After the 2006 season, where he went 6-10, the Texans traded for Matt Schaub and released Carr.
Carr was sacked 249 times in his four-year stay in Houston.
But he was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the offseason and with an injury to Jake Delhomme, he found himself a starting role. His starting role only last four games before he went down to injury, losing his starting job.
He was released at the end of the year and picked up by the Giants as a backup for one year. He then fled to San Fransisco for another backup role, then back to New York, serving as Eli Manning’s backup once again.
Carr was, however, a part of the Super Bowl XLVI team, winning himself a ring so maybe things aren’t so bad for the former top pick.
