Here’s how to watch the Florida State football spring game and what you should be looking for when the Seminoles take the field.

The Florida State Seminoles have their spring game today, but you won’t see the team’s best player on the field.

Running back Dalvin Cook won’t participate after undergoing shoulder surgery earlier in the week that will keep him out of action for two months as he recovers.

The Heisman candidate wasn’t going to play a ton anyway, but his absence will open the door for rising sophomore Jacques Patrick to get extra work and make his case for an increased workload in the fall.

Patrick filled in admirably when Cook was out of the lineup with injury last year, but didn’t get much work when Cook was healthy and dicing up opposing defenses. With questions at the quarterback position, perhaps Jimbo Fisher will rely on the run game this year.

Sean Maguire looks to win the quarterback competition after taking over for Everett Golson as the starter last year. An extra year in the system and experience could mean he’s in a better place mentally to make big plays in the passing game. He will look to prove he can be more than a game-manager or placeholder until one of the young arms on the roster are ready for the big stage.

Whoever does end up as the Florida State starter will have some talented options to work with in Travis Rudolph, Ermon Lane and George Campbell who all came to Tallahassee as five-star recruits and will look to live up to that lofty billing.

Defensively, it’ll be interesting to see how the Noles replace All-American cornerback Jalen Ramsey in the defensive backfield. But I’m just as interested in seeing how they deploy Josh Sweat off the edge because I think he has the potential to be one of the best pass rushers to come through the program.
