Spring game information for the Stanford Cardinal who look to get their season on the right foot with Christian McCaffrey leading the way.

David Shaw and his Stanford football team are back in action today for the first time since their drubbing of the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Rose Bowl.

Running back Christian McCaffrey looks to break his own record for all-purpose yards after breaking the record held by Barry Sanders during his Heisman Trophy season in 1988. Unlike Sanders, McCaffrey didn’t get the Heisman as he finished as the runner-up to Alabama running back Derrick Henry.

This year could be different for McCaffrey and give the Cardinal that elusive Heisman Trophy. In addition to McCaffrey, Stanford has seen Andrew Luck and Toby Gerhart finish a close second in recent years.

McCaffrey will be asked to carry a big workload this year as they break in a new starting quarterback with the departure of Kevin Hogan.

It was a seamless transition from Luck to the supremely underrated and underappreciated Hogan and Shaw hopes that will happen again as Keller Chryst looks to win the competition.

The former top recruit may be more physically talented than Hogan but all he needs is the game experience and practice reps to get comfortable working within the offense.

Defensively, I can’t wait to see what Solomon Thomas does this year. The former five-star recruit is poised for a career year after having 3.5 sacks and finishing second on the team with 10.5 tackles for loss. The junior could be headed for a All-Pac-12 type of season.
