The California Golden Bears got a late surprise to their 2016 recruiting class with the commitment of five-star wide receiver Demetris Robertson on Sunday.

Teams in the running for five-star receiver Demetris Robertson (Savannah, GA. Christian Prep) had to wait three months after National Signing Day to find out where the nation’s top receiver would be playing his college football.

Georgia, Notre Dame and Cal were in the running for the nation’s No. 14 overall recruit and the No. 3 recruit in the state of Georgia, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was previously committed to Alabama and it was believed his home state Georgia Bulldogs where former Alabama coach Kirby Smart is would be his pick.

But Robertson pulled a bit of a surprise on Sunday and committed to play for Sonny Dykes and the Cal Bears.

“I am excited to take my talents to the University of California, Berkeley,” Robertson said, via 247Sports at his news conference at the College Football Hall of Fame. “The first reason is that the education was a big part of my decision. I wanted to keep that foundation. When I went there, it felt like home. Me and the coaching staff have a great relationship. That’s where I felt were the best of all things for me.”

Robertson should be in contention for plenty of early playing time after Cal lost the top six receivers on the roster from last year so the 5-11, 175-pound receiver could contend for a starting spot.

He didn’t do a lot of damage in high school as a receiver with only 12 receptions for 126 yards and one touchdown, but he made an impact as a runner.

Robertson ran for 1,043 yards and had nine touchdowns on the ground and he had 41 tackles and two interceptions on defense and three touchdowns on special teams.
