UAB running back Greg Bryant is fighting for his life after a shooting in Miami early Saturday morning.

Former Notre Dame and current UAB running back Greg Bryant was shot in Miami and found on the driver’s side of his car on I-95 around 4:30 am and listed in critical condition, according to the Palm Beach Post. He was listed in critical condition.

Hours later, reports began to circulate, including a tweet from Bryant’s former position coach at Notre Dame that Bryant had died from his injuries.

Bryant’s former high school tweeted the reports were inaccurate as did the lead investigator.

UAB announced prematurely that Bryant’s injuries were fatal and issued a statement about his passing, but had to issue a retraction moments later.

“We understand that our running back, Greg Bryant is still fighting for his life in a Florida hospital following injuries he sustained in a shooting earlier today,” head coach Bill Clark said. “The condolences we expressed earlier today were based on information a family member at the hospital provided and gave us permission to release. We remain steadfast as a Blazer family in our prayers and support for Greg and his family at this difficult time.”

Bryant was a former five-star recruit coming out of high school when he committed to Notre Dame. He was ruled academically ineligible before last season and decided to transfer to UAB. He was looking to get his college career back on track at a program returning to FBS football after a one-year hiatus when the program was shut down.

Everett Golson was among Bryant’s former teammates who sent out a prayer request for Bryant as he fights for his life but he’s got his hometown, Notre Dame, UAB, college football fans and more

The police have no witnesses and have no suspects in the shooting as their investigation continues. Bryant’s passenger in the car, 25-year-old Maurice Grover sustained minor injuries.

This story will be updated as more information about the status of Bryant is revealed.
