No. 4 – The Recruiting Edge Once Held By Notre Dame Is Gone

In the dark days before satellite television, conference networks, and a world sponsored by ESPN and Budweiser, Notre Dame had a recruiting advantage that few schools could match.

The Irish were one of the only programs in the nation with a guaranteed national television audience every single week. The thought of playing for a program as decorated as Notre Dame and the chance to say “Hi Mom!” to the TV camera every week was enough to lure a fair share of top talent to South Bend.

Those days are so over.

Now just about every program worth its weight in field-turf has a television deal of some sort and can be seen on one of ESPN’s multitude of stations or on one of the many other college football network darlings such as CBS.

You almost have to work harder not to be seen on television.

The vast expansion of television coverage – along with internet and social media making players even more accessible to scouts and fans – have created a lot of recruiting parity, and Notre Dame has come up on the short end of the stick.

Being a part of ACC football would open even more recruiting opportunities for Notre Dame in the form of conference championship games, media days, and other events that the Irish miss by standing alone.
