The addition of four-star tight end Matt Dotson gives the Spartans a dynamic threat in the passing game for coach Mark Dantonio.

The Michigan State Spartans picked up a big commitment on Thursday from 2017 four-star tight end Matt Dotson (Cincinnati, Ohio. Archbishop Moeller.) This news was first reported by Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.

Moller is the No. 290 player in the ’17 class, No. 9 tight end, and No. 13 player in the state of Ohio per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was held in high regard throughout the country as he amassed 29 offers in total.

He was recruited to the Spartans by Secondary Coach Harlon Barnett and Jim Bollman, who doubles as the program’s Co-Offensive Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach.

More from Saturday Blitz

Michigan State was involved with Dotson’s recruitment from the beginning. He received a visit from Bollman on May 15 of last year.  On November 2, an offer was extended his way. He took an unofficial visit later that month and that was it for 2015.

2016 saw Dotson take an unofficial visit to East Lansing on April 15 and then one more exactly two months later in June. We saw his recruitment process come to an end with the commitment today.

The Spartans 2017 class is very strong and is certainly aided by the physical tight end. Dotson is the third four-star commitment and the 14tht overall commitment in the class. The class itself is ranked No. 21 nationally and No. 7 in the Big Ten per the 247Sports Team Rankings.

What will Dotson bring to the Spartans? He is both an effective passing threat and a tremendous run-blocker.  He uses all of his 6-foot-5, 235-pound frame to get separation in the open field and assert his position. He would be an additional red zone threat for the Spartans and would be a tremendous boost for their offense.
