Big 12 Expansion: Ranking the possible schools to be added
3. Brigham Young University
The Pros:
Much like Boise State, BYU is a consistent winner. As an independent team they are always playing and beating Power 5 programs. Since 2011, the Cougars have beaten; Ole Miss, Oregon State, Washington State, Virginia, Texas (twice), and Nebraska.
BYU Cougars
Those types of wins and consistently winning at least 8 games since 2011 is a strong message to the Big 12 to consider adding BYU. The Cougars also have a strong men’s basketball team to go with their outstanding football program. BYU has made it known that they desire to join the Big 12, more so than just about any other team.
The Cons:
Not much to say about BYU, except for their athletic programs outside of football and basketball. Would they be beneficial to the conference as a whole? BYU could also present a scheduling conflict for conference games as the Cougars do not play any sporting events on Sundays.
Would the Big 12 be in favor of moving men’s and women’s basketball and baseball games to respect the religious beliefs of the university? This may prove to be BYU’s Achilles heel in the conference expansion equation but it isn’t an impossible thing that is not doable for the Big 12 to accommodate.
