Penn State Recruiting: 4-star safety Jonathan Sutherland commits
Four-star safety Jonathan Sutherland committed to the Penn State Nittany Lions.
On Sunday, the Penn State Nittany Lions finished off the weekend in a big way, securing a commitment from 2017 four-star safety Jonathan Sutherland (Alexandria VA. Episcopal.) This news was first reported by Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.
Sutherland is the No. 266 player in the 2017 class, No. 23 safety, and the No. 10 player in the state of Virginia per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
Amassing 20 offers in total, he was recruited to Penn State by Charles Huff, who doubles as the program’s special teams coordinator and running backs coach. Safeties Coach Tim Banks was the secondary recruiter.
On the Penn State front, they were involved in his recruitment from the very beginning as he attended a camp on July 19, 2014 and took an unofficial visit to Happy Valley on November 29 of that year. That would be it for 2014, but things would pick up again in 2015 as he attended another camp on July 19.
This year, the program extended him an offer on February 9, and although he would receive interest from other schools, his attention in Penn State remained. He would take one more unofficial visit to the campus on July 16, and that would be all as he closed the book on his recruitment Sunday.
With this pledge, Penn State now has 10 commitments in the 2017 class, including five of the four-star variety. That is good for No. 39 nationally and No. 10 in the Big Ten per the 247Sports Team Rankings.

Sutherland is not afraid to come up and make the big hit. He can read plays well and that allows him to be able to make tackles with consistency. He should be a solid, dependable addition to the Penn State secondary.
