Davis Webb named California starting quarterback
Texas Tech transfer Davis Webb has been named the starting quarterback at California where he’ll replace No. 1 NFL Draft pick, Jared Goff.
Beginning this season, the California Golden Bears will have to adjust to life without Jared Goff. Not a small task by any means, they took a step toward doing so Thursday, as they announced that graduate transfer Davis Webb, who last played for Texas Tech, would be the starting quarterback for the 2016 season.
Webb, who beat out Chase Forrest and Ross Bowers for the job, threw for 5,557 yards and 46 touchdowns for his career with the Red Raiders.
“We felt like it was the right decision to make once separation occurred,” head coach Sonny Dykes said in a statement. “Davis’ maturity and knowledge of what we’re trying to do put him a little bit ahead of our other quarterbacks. He’s new to our program but he came in with three seasons of experience at Texas Tech running this style of offense. We wanted to work out the details of our offense and put all the pieces together, and the quarterback is a pretty important part of that.”
Webb is a quarterback to watch for the 2016 campaign. He is on the watch lists for the Maxwell Award, given to the nation’s top player and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is given to the nation’s top quarterback, and there is no denying the talent is there.

Although this is not an easy task by any means, we have seen cases of transfers coming into a program and making the transition from a top-tier quarterback a little easier. Vernon Adams comes to mind and he did a great job of replacing Marcus Mariota once he left for the NFL.
Now, it is Webb’s turn to lead the reins of a California program on the upswing as he looks to be the new face of the Golden Bears.
