SEC Football Power Rankings: 10 best quarterbacks entering 2016
The SEC has seen its share of brilliant offenses from Gainesville. Steve Spurrier’s Fun ‘n’ Gun and Urban Meyer’s spread attack
Florida’s 2016 starting quarterback is redshirt sophomore Luke Del Rio who has transferred twice in his long, journeyman career. He hasn’t seen the field much, and will likely have to carry a scant, inexperienced offense.
The starting running back, tight end, two offensive linemen and two of three receivers are gone. To make matters worse for the Gators, Antonio Callaway’s sexual assault charges could leave Del Rio without his top receiver as well.
However, head coach Jim McElwain is a great offensive mind. He turned Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson into an NFL third-round pick. He turned Will Grier and Treon Harris into capable quarterbacks that led the Gators to a 10-4, 2015. He could easily turn a guy like Del Rio into a solid college starter.
He’s been in the offense for a year, the majority of the offensive is back and his numbers in the spring game were brilliant. He completed 10-of-11 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Florida has an opportunity to have a starter for three years. McElwain can bring along Del Rio slowly with a strong returning defense to cushion his progression. But, the SEC can be a mean place to new starters.
