Oklahoma Football: 5 reasons Sooners win 2016 national title
1. Baker Mayfield is Fully in Charge
Mayfield was, to say the least, one of the key cogs in the Sooners offensive attack. After sitting out the 2014 season following his transfer from Texas Tech, Mayfield lit up the college football landscape.
Throwing for 3,700 yards, 37 touchdowns and seven interceptions, Mayfield showed that the year off did not affect him. His 68.1 completion percentage did not hurt matters either ranking him No. 3 in the country behind Brandon Doughty and Vernon Adams Jr.
Mayfield will be a reason the Sooners win the title because of his ability to command an offense and spread the field. His 9.4 yards per pass attempt put him in a three-way tie for second place with Brandon Doughty of Western Kentucky and Kevin Hogan of Stanford. He got a taste of the postseason last year, and now he appears primed to take the next step as he looks to continue his exemplary play.
