The Nebraska Cornhuskers honored their punter Sam Foltz, who died in a car accident in July, during their game against the Fresno State Bulldogs.

The entire University of Nebraska campus was heatbroken in July when they heard that punter Sam Foltz was killed in a car crash with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler. In their first game without Foltz, the Cornhuskers paid tribute in a very touching way.

Nebraska kicked off their football season on Saturday evening against the Fresno State Bulldogs. In the first quarter, the punt team went out to kick the ball away. However, to honor their fallen teammate, only 10 men went out onto the field, saving a spot for Foltz.

The Cornhuskers let the clock run out, but weren’t flagged for a delay of game. Instead, the entire crowd roared and gave a standing ovation to honor Foltz, as did both teams. You can see the video of the entire tribute via Twitter below.

Although the Cornhuskers have a season to focus on, the entire team is still mourning the loss of Foltz. The punter is expected to be honored throughout the season with signs and patches while the team does what it can to make a run in the Big Ten.

Few teams in the nation have had to deal with as much emotionally as the Cornhuskers leading into the season, and the only thing we can hope for is that they use that emotion to win the conference for their teammate.
