No SEC Team Other Than Alabama Can Make the Playoffs

Most SEC detractors will give you that Alabama is good…really good. But beyond that, the stumbling in the first week of the season and a couple of close calls in Week 2 have brought many to the conclusion that the SEC is done as a powerful conference.

Not so fast, my friends (shakes pencil with stiff motion).

The SEC is far from down and out, in fact, they may be once again at the top of the conference heap when the smoke clears this season.

More from Saturday Blitz

While some other conferences have been pussyfooting around, shopping the bakery shelves for the most tasty cupcakes for two weeks, the SEC has already played four in-conference games and nine Power-5 opponents (going 5-4 in those nine games).

That’s far from over, especially considering the number of ranked teams in that group of games. It’s certainly not going to be Alabama or nobody coming out of the SEC.

The SEC is fine. While some other conferences are padding their resumes with wins and fat point differentials against token resistance, the SEC has been tuning up against real competition. That’s going to matter a lot when 1-loss teams are compared by the playoff selection committee down the road.
