Heisman Trophy Watch 2016: Top 5 candidates after Week 3
Don’t know much about San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey just yet? Well, you might want to change that as he’s quietly becoming one of the best running backs in the country.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior running back is approaching the 5,000-yard mark for the Aztecs and he can probably reach it in one or two more contests. After putting up 752 yards and eight touchdown on 6.0 yards per carry as a true freshman in 2013, Pumphrey has only gotten better and more explosive.
Following a solid freshman season up with 3,500-plus yards and 37 touchdowns in the next two seasons and he’s already showing off as a senior. It’s hard to understand just why no one knows about the speedy back from San Diego State, but in an age when everyone is so concerned about elite programs getting all the attention, kids like Pumphrey fly under the radar.
If San Diego State keeps winning, though, he won’t be an unknown running back for very long. Through three games, the Aztecs are 3-0 and just made their debut in the Week 4 AP Poll rankings at No. 22.
Pumphrey has rushed for 379 yards and four touchdowns on a career-best 7.6 yards per carry average. Keep an eye on this kid.
