Heisman Trophy Watch 2016: Top 5 candidates after Week 3
The numbers against Oklahoma weren’t standing out nor were they making people say ‘wow’, but J.T. Barrett continues to be a winner. Since taking over as the starting back for Braxton Miller in 2014, Barrett has won all but two of his starts, losing to Michigan State and Virginia Tech, while beating just about anyone the Buckeyes have faced.
I say just about anyone because he gave way to Cardale Jones at the end of the 2014 season when he got injured and the backup went on to win the Big Ten title, beat Alabama and Oregon to win the College Football Playoff. He was then given the starting job to begin the 2015 season and Barrett forced him out eventually.
Now that it’s his job, and his job only, Barrett is looking more comfortable with Ohio State. He’s no longer in fear of getting benched after making a poor play and he’s focusing on just winning games, and doing a heck of a job at it.
Barrett took down Oklahoma on the road this past week, asserting his dominance as a college football quarterback. With a young team around him, he put his guys on his back and carries them to victory, passing for 152 yards and four touchdowns on 14-of-20 completions. He added another 74 yards in the run game as well.
If the junior can continue to make the right decisions in the pass game and run the ball effectively, he might just steal the Heisman this year.
