Papering the trees at Toomer’s Corner is an iconic fan institution. Even after the famous trees in Auburn were poisoned by an Alabama fan in January 2011, the tradition continued. Over the past decade the increased hatred toward Auburn has been a result of the school’s rises and falls on the field. With a win in the 2011 BCS National Championship and a return to the game three years later, the Tigers have rewarded their fans with the highest of highs.
They have also endured some painful lows. While Auburn has played for two national titles, they have also had two losing seasons in the past decade. Yet the lowest fan support dipped was in 2012 when the team went 3-9 in Gene Chizik’s last year. The team still reached 94.5 percent of capacity that season at Jordan-Hare Stadium. A 17-game sellout streak ended in September 2016 against Arkansas State, but Auburn has regularly remained above 85,000 in attendance over the course of the decade and through three different head coaches.
They haven’t always shown the greatest of loyalty to the men in charge of the program. Yet Auburn fans have remained faithful to the navy and burnt orange through the best and worst of times.
