How Tennessee came back vs. Florida
By Mike Dyce
Here is how the Tennessee Volunteers mounted a comeback against the Florida Gators.
The Tennessee Volunteers went into the locker room at half time down 21-3 to Florida and their chances of ending an 11-year losing streak well in the rear view mirror. The Tennessee fans let their team hear it too, booing as they walked off the field.
But 31 unanswered points in the second half has the Volunteers on the cusp of their first win against Florida in 12 years.
So how did this come back occur?
Well in large part on the arm of quarterback Joshua Dobbs. Here is a break down by score.
A mid-third quarter touchdown was a key component of the momentum shifting. Dobbs found a wide-open Jalen Hurd for a 23-yard touchdown.
The Volunteers defense stood tall, held the Gators to a three-and-out twice, book ending their own three-and-out.
Then a three-play drive ended in another touchdown. First, Dobbs found Josh Malone for a 30-yard gain. Then a 20-yard strike to Ethan Wolf brought Tennessee within four of the Gators.
Another Volunteer defensive stand held the Gators at bay. Then it was the Dobbs show again. This time it was a 67-yard strike from Dobbs to Jauan Jennings for the go-ahead touchdown.
The Volunteers defense continued to set the table for their offense, intercepting Florida quarterback Austin Appleby.
Dobbs went back to Josh Malone a few plays later, this time it was a crossing route for a 42-yard touchdown.
Then Hurd ran 19 yards to set up the Vols and Dobbs did the rest, rumbling 22 yards and seemingly carrying the entire Gator defense into the endzone.
If this score stands, it will be a huge win for Tennessee and the momentum could extend beyond the game.
