Texas began the 2016 season the best way Charlie Strong could have imagined. His Longhorns hosted No. 10 Notre Dame and took them down in overtime, 50-47. Texas jumped all the way to No. 11 in the AP Poll, but now that Notre Dame is 1-3 to start the year, the validity of that ranking is questioned.
What can’t be questioned, however, is the talent of freshman quarterback Shane Buechele who has accounted for 720 yards and seven touchdowns with a 66 percent completion rate. He has also rushed for another 66 yards and a score for the 2-1 Longhorns.
While Buechele has four receivers with over 100 yards, it’s the run game that has impressed the most. D’Onta Foreman leads the team with 288 yards and three touchdowns while Chris Warren III is right behind him with 260 and three scores of his own. Don’t sleep on Tyrone Swoopes in the run game, either.
Oklahoma State, on the other hand, has struggled to open the season, posting a 2-2 record through four weeks after ranking in the first Top 25 of the year. The downfall began with a home loss to Central Michigan on the final play and carried over into last week’s defeat at the hands of Baylor.
Mason Rudolph is averaging over 300 yards per game through the air, accumulating 1,296 and six touchdowns with a 62 percent completion rate on the year. That would seem like enough to win more than two of the first four games, but the defense has struggled, at times.
James Washington has also been a star for the Cowboys, catching a team-high 25 passes for 488 yards and three touchdowns. Jhajuan Seales and Jalen McCleskey have both broken the 200-yard mark for receiving as well. All this is taking place while the run game suffers mightily.
