Will the Texas Longhorns fire Charlie Strong after the loss to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry?

The Texas Longhorns almost got a second consecutive signature win over the rival Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry. Instead, the Longhorns lost a close game they arguably should’ve won given the turnovers from the Sooners.

There were reports that Strong needs to finish the season with the Longhorns with at least of a record of 8-4 to keep his job. This loss drops the Longhorns below .500 with a 2-3 record, and one loss away from that 8-4 mark with more than half the schedule to come.

There is a strong argument that Strong has the Longhorns on the cusp of breaking through to the next level with a full slate of young talent he recruited in the program now.

But with coaches like Les Miles and potentially Tom Herman of Houston on the market, Strong’s time with the Longhorns could very well be coming to an end.

The leader in the clubhouse for Strong’s job is Herman, arguably the hottest coach on the market after leading the Cougars to an upset win over Oklahoma in the season-opener and a No. 6 ranking. Herman has Texas ties as a former grad assistant under Mack Brown. He knows the state and recruiting well because he has coached at Texas State, Rice, Sam Houston State, and Houston. He also served as an offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance that Strong could stay in Austin. He has recruited well, and has the program on the cusp of breaking out and they might give him one more season to prove himself.
