On paper, Louisville is a far superior team to NC State. The Cardinals have the most dynamic player in the country to this point in sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson. NC State doesn’t have a single player that the average football fan could pick out of a lineup. However, the Wolfpack have made a name for themselves in the ACC over the years as spoilers for teams with greater aspirations.

NC State nearly added the 2016 Clemson Tigers to their trophy case last week. The Wolfpack pushed the ACC favorites to the brink of disaster. A #collegekicker moment prevented them from pulling off the upset in the game’s waning seconds.  NC State has the kind of defense you want going up against Lamar Jackson. The conventional wisdom is you want to make the elusive runner into more of a pocket passer. The Wolfpack boast the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the country. They also have the advantage when it comes to turnovers, another crucial component of this kind of upset. NC State is 28th in turnover margin and has forced seven in their last two games.

Louisville’s top-ranked offense looked to still be hungover from their heartbreaking loss to Clemson against Duke despite a bye week in between. The Cardinals had a surprisingly snug game against the Blue Devils. The game was tied at 7-7 after the first quarter and the Cardinals only had a three-point lead headed into halftime. The final score of 24-14 is incredibly deceiving. On the one hand, without a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to seal, it’s a one-score game. On the other, Louisville nearly doubled Duke in total yards, 469-239. Louisville was still well below their FBS-leading averages of 52.3 points and 627.5 yards per game.
