8. Gus Malzahn

Total Annual Salary: $4,729,500

It appeared that the fastest route to the SEC West was through Arkansas State. Just like Hugh Freeze before him, Gus Malzahn used Arkansas State as a stepping stone to get to the SEC. After one year with the program, the Tigers hired the former Auburn offensive coordinator prior to the 2013 season.

The immediate results were amazing, as Malzahn took a program mired in losing to the BCS National Championship in his first year. Although Auburn lost that game, fans like he would be the coach of the future. Those feelings did not last long, however.

Prior to Auburn’s 5-2 start this year, Malzahn sat on one the most agonizing hot seats in America. Auburn posted 8-5 and 7-6 record in their two seasons following their championship loss, and things did not appear to be getting better. The offense is now clicking, though, and the Tigers have a shot at winning the rest of their schedule. Fans may be uneasy, but Malzahn is again safe for now.
