Before the Cubs broke their “Curse of the Billy Goat,” Clemson broke their curse of Clemsoning. However, just because you do it once doesn’t mean those perplexing demons won’t ever reappear. The Tigers were deemed the second best team in the country by the College Football Playoff Committee in the first rankings of the season on Tuesday. Their schedule sets up favorably the rest of the way. And yet, Clemson always feels like they are on the edge tripping and falling flat on their face. (Literally, when it comes to their pregame ritual.)

Dabo Swinney got so frustrated last year with the constant feeling from the press that they were waiting for the Tigers to “pull a Clemson” that he blew up at a reporter.  To his credit, the letdown never came last year. The Tigers’ only loss saw them cover as underdogs in the National Championship Game — hardly the textbook definition of Clemsoning. However, this year they have already had a few scares. Two weeks ago, in a classic look-ahead spot, NC State was a competent kicker away from pulling off the upset. Syracuse comes to town this week in the classic letdown spot after Clemson’s tough three-point win last week at Florida State.

Syracuse already has one major conference upset on their resume this season. The Orange handed Virginia Tech their first conference loss of the season. Quarterback Eric Dungey had over 400 yards of total offense in the 31-17 win. The good news is Syracuse is coming off a bye. The bad news is Clemson has the 17th ranked passing defense to matchup against the Orange’s 6th ranked passing offense. NC State pushed the Tigers with good defense and some well-timed turnovers. Syrcause is going to try to do it by airing it out.
