Group of Five: Week 10 Access Bowl Power Rankings
By Zach Bigalke
Appalachian State cruised last weekend against Texas State, scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter to pull away 28-3 at halftime. Against the Bobcats, Taylor Lamb threw for just 120 yards but had four touchdowns through the air. Both Jalin Moore and Marcus Cox rushed for over 100 yards apiece, with Cox scoring the lone touchdown on the ground for the Mountaineers. The defense held Texas State under 200 total yards, including stifling the Bobcat rushing attack to the tune of allowing just 14 yards on 28 carries.
Next week is the big test. The trip to face Troy will likely determine which team wins the Sun Belt championship — or even whether there might be a split championship since Appalachian State does not play Arkansas State this season. If the Mountaineers win, they close out the season with winnable games against UL-Monroe and New Mexico State. The lack of a statement win hurts the Mountaineers a bit, as does the perception of the Sun Belt in general. But if App State can take down the Trojans next week, they could factor into the Group of Five equation.
