Charlie Ward was the quarterback who finally broke the streak of bad luck in Tallahassee and earned Bobby Bowden his first national title as the Florida State head coach as well as the first Heisman Trophy in school history. The two-sport star who went on to play in the NBA guided the Seminoles to an 11-1 record that culminated in a #1-versus-#2 victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. His 31 total touchdowns ranked seventh nationally, and he proved to be a threat with both his arm and his legs.
By playing for such a high-profile team that was ranked first for all but one week of the 1993 season, Ward was consistently in the spotlight in big games. The result was a landslide in Heisman voting, as Ward swept every region of the country by at least 200 points, won 80 percent of all first-place votes, and finished with more than five out of every six possible points from the ballots.
