Given his NFL struggles and his foray into minor-league baseball, it is easy to forget just how dominant Tim Tebow was during his time with the Florida Gators. Tebow dominated opponents with both his arm and his legs, throwing for 29 touchdowns and rushing for another 22 to become the first player to score 20 or more both through the air and on the ground. The Gator quarterback scored a touchdown on every tenth play and won the Heisman despite a down season for Urban Meyer’s Florida.
Tebow won despite a serious challenge from fellow SEC star Darren McFadden of Arkansas, as the two finished 254 points apart in the final tally. But Tebow finished first on the ballots in every region but the southwest, and he earned 171 more first-place votes than McFadden in the end. In the process he became the first sophomore to win the award, and while the Gators won the national title the following year Tebow never managed to join Archie Griffin as a two-time winner.
