Texas football is reportedly reaching out to former Notre Dame quarterback and transfer target Malik Zaire.

It hasn’t taken Tom Herman long to make some moves within the Texas football program. Taking over for Charlie Strong, Herman has made some changes in recruiting and now he’s targeting a change to the current roster, targeting former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire.

According to a tweet from Horns Digest (Texas’ Scout page), the Longhorns are taking a close look at Zaire following the transfer of Brandon Harris to North Carolina.

This is an interesting move by Herman who currently has talented soon-to-be sophomore Shane Buechele returning. The first-year head coach could help build Buechele into one of the best quarterbacks in the country, but he’s targeting the veteran Zaire.

Is this a good move? In my opinion, no. While Zaire offers a rare skill set that includes a strong, accurate arm and the ability to tuck and run with the ball effectively, Buechele is the future under center. The freshman passed for 2,958 yards and 21 touchdowns last season while rushing for 151 and two scores.

While he may not have the same elusiveness as Zaire, he’s still athletic enough to avoid pressure and run when he has to.

Zaire has a history with Texas football which makes this move even more interesting. Back in 2015 when he was the newly-named starter, he opened the season with a 19-for-22 passing performance, accounting for 313 yards and three touchdowns. He was injured a week later, but he showed flashes of Heisman-like brilliance.

Texas fans definitely remember that game, but many would be willing to give him a shot to create a quarterback battle with Buechele and incoming freshman Sam Ehlinger.
