4. Chance to win title in 2017, go out on top

Let’s say USC wins the national title in 2017, which many experts believe they have a solid chance to do. If the Trojans go all the way and take home the championship trophy, Sam Darnold would have the world’s highest expectations on his shoulders if he returned for another year.

Why not go out on top?

Heck, even if USC won the Pac-12 title and made the College Football Playoff but lost in the first round to, let’s say, Alabama, it would make the added pressure to make it back and win the whole thing in 2018 that much more intense.

If Darnold were to choose to return to USC in 2018, it would likely be because his Trojans had “unfinished business”. That’s a common theme for young stars who decide to return even though they’re considered high draft selections.

There’s a good chance USC will represent the Pac-12 in the College Football Playoff in 2017 and if that’s the case, Darnold should end his career after that, no matter what happens. Finish on top and don’t risk damaging a legacy.
