Ole Miss football recruits react to Hugh Freeze resignation
By Phil Poling
Hugh Freeze resigned his position as head coach of Ole Miss football on Thursday and Rebel recruits reacted accordingly.
Just before 8 p.m., an announcement was made that Hugh Freeze “resigned, effective immediately” as head coach of Ole Miss. Chancellor Jeff Vitter and AD Jeff Bjork held a press conference shortly after to briefly explain.
“Coach Freeze resigned this afternoon after confirming to Ross and me a pattern of personal misconduct inconsistent with the standards we expect from the leader of our football team.”
We won’t go into all the specifics of his resignation here, but how does his departure effect recruiting? Luckily, we’ve the gift of Twitter; grab some popcorn and watch the recruits rebel.
From de-commitments and calling off visits, to simple one-word tweets and “no interviews” comments, Ole Miss recruiting is taking a hit, a la Laremy Tunsil.

Hess, the man of few words, is a three-star athlete from Birmingham, Ala., who committed to the Rebels on June 21. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing around 220 pounds, he could fight for snaps on the defensive side of the ball immediately.
Bobby Wolfe, the only commit for Ole Miss in the class of 2019, de-committed following the news of Freeze’s resignation. Hailing from the Lone Star State, the Longhorns are swooping in to stake their claim for the three-star defensive back.
Taye Barber, another Texas product, unscheduled his visit to Ole Miss that was planned for this weekend. Barber possesses that “#TexasSpeed” that seemingly anyone can claim online, but the tape doesn’t lie.

It feels like forever ago that Freeze hauled in one of the most impressive recruiting classes in recent college football memory, but it was just four years ago. In 2013, Freeze snagged the No. 1 overall player in Robert Nkemdiche, along with 5-star recruits Laquan Treadwell and Laremy Tunsil. He’d follow up that recruiting cycle with successful seasons on the field, going 27-12 from 2013 through 2015, including a Sugar Bowl win in 2015.
