Defensive Backs

Starting safeties: Tanner Jacobson, Micah Hannemann
Backups: Zayne Anderson, Kamel Greene

Four years ago, Tanner Jacobson was part of Kliff Kingsbury’s first Texas Tech team in Lubbock. After that season, though, Jacobson decided to transfer to BYU. After redshirting and serving a mission in Bolivia, he was in the thick of the Cougars depth chart at safety. The junior will join redshirt senior Micah Hannemann, who has started 25 straight games at strong safety.

Veteran backups Zayne Anderson and Kamel Greene both have plenty of experience in reserve roles. Anderson suited up and made his way into all 13 games last year after suffering a season-ending injury as a freshman. Greene played in 10 games last year, his first on the field after transferring from Washington State.

Starting cornerbacks: Troy Warner, Dayan Ghanwoloku
Backups: Chris Wilcox, Isaiah Armstrong

As freshmen, Troy Warner and Dayan Ghanwoloku started the majority of the games at cornerback for BYU in 2016. Warner led the team in pass breakups. Ghanwoloku had a talent for generating momentum-changing turnovers, averaging over 35 yards per interception return. The pair should once again fill the starting roles for the Cougars.

They will be pushed by another sophomore, Chris Wilcox, who started two games last year. Isaiah Armstrong, a former junior-college product, should also manage to get some reps in the defensive backfield. Armstrong entered six games last season and should see more of the field in 2017.
