Michigan football has secured the commitment of the No. 1 defensive end in the 2019 recruiting class, Chris Hinton out of Atlanta, Georgia.

The Maize and Blue scored a big victory over the mighty SEC on Saturday night. The Wolverines earned the verbal commitment of the nation’s best defensive end in the 2019 class, and they did it right out from under the noses of the Georgia Bulldogs.

247 Sports tabbed Chris Hinton as the No. 1 defensive end, the No. 2 player in the state of Georgia and the No. 9 overall player in the nation. His offer list reflected his impressive recruiting ranks. Every major SEC, Big 10 and ACC program had extended an offer to Hinton, giving him the full array of choices.

The final projections had Hinton’s race narrowed down to two teams. The in-state Georgia Bulldogs and the Michigan Wolverines. Why did Hinton elect to head so far from home? Hinton told 247 Sports that he wanted to be a part of “a great institution and a great football program and a great tradition.” Michigan checks all of those boxes.

Hinton is the fourth commitment of the 2019 class for Michigan. He joins Louisville, Kentucky defensive end Stephen Herron as the second five-star in the class. Entering the weekend the Wolverines had the No. 8 class in the country. That number will surely improve when Hinton’s commitment is factored in.

2019 is a long ways away. There will be plenty of turnover throughout the college football landscape. While Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh looks safe today, there’s no telling what could happen a year from now. Verbal commitments aren’t binding, but for now, Michigan has reason to celebrate.
